The Ukrainian Presidential Elections! (With Updates)

Update, 1:25 PM: The BBC, among other sources, is calling a Poroshenko win! He’s not my favorite candidate, but he’s better than Tymoshenko! Hooray!

Happy election day, Ukraine! Today, the Ukrainian people are voting for their next president. I’ll update this post periodically with new links and thoughts. Of course, I welcome any sort of discussion in the comments.

RFE/RL has a great post called “Eight Things You Didn’t Know About The Ukrainian Election.”

What I think will happen: It’ll come down to a race between Yulia Tymoshenko (the corrupt “gas princess” who has talked about exterminating Russians in Ukraine) and Pyotr Poroshenko (a corrupt oligarch who made a fortune selling chocolate, of all things). If neither candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, there will be a run-off on June 15. The run-off is the most likely scenario. Ultimately, I think Tymoshenko will end up as president, most likely through fraud.

RFE/RL also has a live blog on the elections.
