Over the past few months, some friends have asked me why Russia is so up in arms about what is happening in Ukraine. The Russians view the West as infringing on their geopolitical sphere of influence—after all, since the end of the Cold War, we have sought to expand NATO practically into Russia’s backyard.
Yesterday, I saw this tweet by Alexander Nekrassov, a Russian living in London. It so pithily explains the situation that I had to share it with you.
Imagine the Russian ambassador in London visiting Edinburgh, to express Russia's support for Scottish independence. #Ukraine

One thing that annoys the Russians is Western countries’ meddling in foreign countries’ affairs to the detriment of Russia. (Case in point: US ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt’s support of the protestors in Ukraine.)
